Essential Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy: Everyday Practice in Our Diverse World is a course designed to help you start the process of learning about counseling and psychotherapy theories and applying these practices into our diverse world. This course discusses the traditional forces of counseling and therapy, such as psycho-dynamic, behavioral, existential-humanistic, cognitive, and multicultural, as well as new developments in the field, such as motivational interviewing, solution focus, and acceptance and commitment. Also highlighted throughout are the micro-skills, the building blocks of effective counseling and psychotherapy, the importance of learning more than one theory, and the factors common to all.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have mastered many different divisions of counseling and psychotherapy, including sections on the empathic attitude, conducting intentional interviews, family counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy and more. In the active learning component of this course, students can use flashcards, quizzes and PowerPoint slideshows alongside their textbook to better understand the concepts presented on counseling and psychotherapy at a more hands-on level. These extra learning activities encourage students to stay engaged in the course each week and keep the material at the forefront of their mind as they dive into each proceeding module.
