About Understanding Epidemiology

In this text, we discuss how epidemiology is used in public health practice and the ethical requirements of conducting research with human participants. We provide case studies, as well as sections focused on applying epidemiology to disease prevention and outbreak situations. In doing so, we draw from a rich history of epidemiological investigations. Beyond introducing students to the scientific principles of epidemiology, the book also focuses on developing the quantitative reasoning skills needed to interpret and apply the findings of epidemiological studies.

Upon successful completion of this course, will be able to: 1) generate hypotheses about diseases and potential risk factors; 2) design epidemiological studies to test these hypotheses; 3) discuss the strengths and limitations of each epidemiological study design; 4) calculate appropriate measures of association between diseases and risk factors; 5) critically read both the epidemiological and public health literature; and 6) use data from epidemiological studies to evaluate the use and effectiveness of public health programs and policies.
