About the Course

In this course we begin to address an issue of fundamental importance for all of organic chemistry: the structures of organic molecules. What exactly is meant by this term structure when applied to a molecule? A partial answer is that it refers to the arrangement in space of the atoms and bonds making up the molecule. Chemists normally represent structures with drawings. When doing so, they follow various conventions for depicting atoms, their arrangement in space, and the bonded interactions among them. Molecular model sets of various kinds are also used to visualize the structures of molecules. In the opening modules, we will introduce some of the basic ideas and conventions to be followed throughout this course.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will gain knowledge on many different aspects of organic chemistry including modules devoted to Intermolecular and Acid-Base Interactions, Ethers and Epoxides, Synthetic Polymers, as well as a range of topics in between.

In the active learning component of this course, students can use flashcards and quizzes alongside their textbook to better understand the concepts presented on organic chemistry at a more hands-on level. These extra learning activities encourage students to stay engaged in the course each week and keep the material at the forefront of their mind as they dive into each proceeding module.
